Fibromyalgia and Bipolar Disorder: extent of comorbidity and therapeutic implications ABSTRACT Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome that affects muscles and soft tissues. Symptoms include chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and painful trigger points and and psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety. In particular, there is strong evidence of comorbidity of FM and Bipolar Disorder (BD). Therefore, adequate psychiatric assessment is recommended in FM patients with suspected symptoms consistent with BD prior to administration of antidepressants in the treatment of FM. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to further investigate the comorbidity of fibromyalgia and BD, papers were reviewed from 2006 to February 2016 using the NIH PubMed Literature Search System to search for relevant articles. Inclusion criteria were that manuscripts 1) be primary peer-review research article; 2) concisely explained, or investigated etiological similarities and therapeutic implications of FM and BP; 3) be published in English.
